The Yard in Bath

📍Bath, UK

For our Neighbourhood Stays series we uncover hotels and boutique boltholes that ooze style and personality whilst celebrating local. In this instalment we step into a revamped 18th-century inn…

Neighbourhood: In the heart of beautiful Bath. Tucked away down a cobbled street it is a peaceful haven but you right in the mix of all the historical haunts. The famous Royal Crescent and Roman Baths are just a five-minute stroll away.

What to expect: Fourteen bedrooms that ooze character set around an historic courtyard. Once a coaching inn, the hotel has been restored with each room given a signature look. A gentle wine bar extends into the courtyard in the summer months.

Community and ambience: Owners Esther Newman and Ed Haskins left London for Bath to breathe new life into this beautiful inn. With backgrounds in property development and PR, they realised the 18th-century Kings Arms was crying out for a new era as a personable place to stay in the city. They have worked with suppliers from the area to cultivate an authentic and considered environment that celebrates its surroundings.

Design details: Each bedroom and ensuite combines traditional fabrics from local designers and restored historic features. Every room has its own size and style so there is the sense of stepping into a cosy home.

The common features are comfy king size beds, crisp linen sheets, rainfall showers, fluffy towels, Bramley organic toiletries, Netflix, Roberts Radios. You can also expect a fully stocked mini-bar, complimentary fresh milk and a Nespresso coffee machine.

On the menu: A complimentary breakfast with delights such as Hobbs House Bakery bread and homemade granola is a real treat. The Courtyard cafe is the place to graze on Danish pastries and Wild Flour bakes.

The space takes on more of a wine bar guise in the evening and is ideal for a pre or post dinner tipple. On Friday nights there is Fizz and Fromage where English sparkling wine is paired with a locally sourced cheeseboard.

Spa experiences: Whilst there may not be a spa on site, Thermae Bath Spa is just down the road. Book ahead though, it is always super busy.

Rates: Rooms start from £95 per night, theyardinbath.co.uk.
