The Carpenter’s Arms is serving breakfast in its secret garden
📍Hammersmith, London
With the garden already whispered about as one of West London’s hidden hotspots, now there is all the more reason to visit…
Neighbourhood: On the Hammersmith–Chiswick border, just around the corner from the elegant St Peter’s Square and moments from the Thames, The Carpenter’s Arms is a true local favourite. Its quiet and residential Black Lion Lane location makes it feel tucked away, yet it is perfectly placed for a weekend that might include riverside walks and browsing Chiswick High Road’s boutiques. We particularly love a visit on a Sunday when the High Road hosts regular outdoor flower, antiques and food markets.
“Fluffy cinnamon French toast arrives golden and pillowy, topped with banana, and a drizzle of maple syrup”
The Story: A nineteenth-century pub with deep roots in West London, The Carpenter’s Arms has long been known for its characterful interiors, excellent food and a sun-filled garden that regulars like to keep to themselves. Now, with the launch of a new weekend breakfast menu, it has added another reason to visit.
Setting: Inside, expect heritage wood panelling, vintage details, sweet cafe curtains and warm, lived-in charm. On sunny mornings, the secret(ish) garden is where you will want to be—leafy, calm and surprisingly spacious, it is the kind of spot where a leisurely breakfast easily drifts into brunch. In fact, when we visited, we felt as if we had been transported to a flower-filled terrace in the Mediterranean.
On the menu: The breakfast line-up is impressive. Fluffy cinnamon French toast arrives golden and pillowy, topped with banana, smoky bacon and a drizzle of maple syrup, while the spiced shakshouka offers a rich tomato and pepper base with baked eggs, feta and warm pitta.
The classic eggs royale is a winner, with smoked salmon, perfectly poached eggs and glossy hollandaise layered over an English muffin. For something more casual, the bacon and egg brioche bun is buttery, simple and perfectly executed, while the traditional full English delivers all the hearty essentials. To drink, freshly squeezed orange juice feels bright and restorative, while a Bloody Mary or Mimosa turns breakfast into a celebration.
Crowd: A relaxed mix of West London locals, riverside walkers and those in the know. Expect couples easing into the weekend, friends and family catching up over coffee, and the occasional solo diner with the papers.
Neighbourhood note: Breakfast is served on weekends and Bank Holiday Mondays, from 9.30 to 11.30am. With the garden already whispered about as one of West London’s hidden hotspots, it is worth reserving your table.
